No. And we understand why you'd ask β a lot of education technology is exactly that: a general-purpose conversational tool with a school logo on top. Rowan is fundamentally different in architecture.
General-purpose tools accept any prompt and generate any content. Rowan is scoped to STEM β plant science, soil, sensors, and the math and coding that support them. It won't write your child's essays or homework, and off-topic requests get a gentle redirect. This is enforced by a server-side subject guardrail, not classroom policy.
More importantly, general-purpose tools give you the answer. Rowan does the opposite β it asks your child questions, requires physical observation, and refuses to provide guidance until the student has engaged in reasoning. The student does the thinking. Rowan guides the scientific process.
Absolutely not. The teacher controls every aspect of the student experience. The teacher decides which lessons to assign, which plants students observe, what questions the curriculum covers, and when students use the tool. Every question and response is logged to the teacher dashboard for review.

We've read it carefully. The Stanford SCALE review, The Evidence Base on AI in K-12: A 2026 Review, found that the causal research on AI in schools is still very limited, and that where AI does lift student performance the gains often do not survive the tool being taken away: "AI improves performance with access but when assessed independently without AI support, effects are mixed." We collect the minimum: a first name or nickname (chosen by the teacher), grade level and age range, the plant observations your child types in, their questions and Rowan's answers, sensor readings from the class garden, and basic participation records. No email, no last name, no address, no phone number, no photos of your child, no voice recordings, no location data from students.
All data is encrypted in transit (TLS 1.2 or higher) and encrypted at rest on managed database infrastructure. Student data is never used to train models, never sold, never used for advertising, and never used to build profiles. We are designed for COPPA, FERPA, and NYS Education Law 2-d compliance.
Your child's plant observations belong to your child's classroom. At the end of the school year, a teacher or school administrator can request their students' records be provided and then removed from our systems.

Yes. Rowan Guardian Classroom is a supplemental curriculum tool, not a mandatory requirement. If you prefer that your child not use the platform, speak with their teacher. Your child can still participate fully in the garden program β they would simply record their observations on paper instead of in the digital science journal.
